The Kano State Hospitals Management Board has suspended three staff members directly involved in the treatment of Aishatu Umar, a housewife who died following a surgical procedure at Abubakar Imam Urology Centre, Kano.

The suspension takes immediate effect.
The Board’s Public Relations Officer, Samira Suleiman, confirmed the action in a statement released on Wednesday.

“Following a preliminary and transparent investigation ordered by the Executive Secretary, Mansur Mudi Nagoda, the Board has established that the unfortunate incident involving the late Aishatu Umar occurred at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre,” Suleiman said.

She added, “In line with our commitment to accountability, professionalism, and patient safety, the Board has suspended three personnel directly involved in the case from all clinical activities with immediate effect.”

The matter has been formally referred to the Kano State Medical Ethical Committee for further investigation and appropriate disciplinary measures in accordance with applicable laws, professional guidelines, and ethical standards.

The Board extended its deepest condolences to Umar’s family, sympathising with them over their loss. It also reassured the public that negligence will not be tolerated and affirmed its commitment to safeguarding patient lives, dignity, and trust across all state health facilities.

The Board emphasized that it will continue to strengthen internal monitoring, enforce professional standards, and implement measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

According to Umar’s family, she had been experiencing severe abdominal pain for several months following the surgery in September 2025.

Her son, Mohammed, wrote on Facebook that she passed away around 1 a.m. on Tuesday.
The Kano State Hospitals Management Board had ordered an immediate and thorough investigation into the incident following her death.
