Libyan security forces have uncovered a mass grave containing the bodies of 21 undocumented migrants on the outskirts of Ajdabiya.

The discovery was made during a joint operation by the Libya Internal Security Agency, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), and the Libyan Red Crescent. Authorities say the migrants were killed by human traffickers after being held in captivity.

Migrant Rescue Watch confirmed that a Libyan national suspected of orchestrating the killings has been arrested.

The investigation also led to the rescue of several migrants, including women and children, who were still being held by the trafficking network.

Libya remains a key transit route for sub-Saharan migrants attempting to reach Europe via the Mediterranean, but many fall victim to trafficking syndicates, facing abuse, extortion, forced labor, and sometimes death.

Human rights groups have urged Libyan authorities and the international community to step up efforts to dismantle trafficking networks and protect vulnerable migrants.

Authorities said investigations into the Ajdabiya killings are ongoing, with efforts continuing to locate other potential victims still held in captivity.
