He cautioned against allowing the international system to become a “den of robbers” where the most ruthless take what they want

German President Frank‑Walter Steinmeier has issued a strong rebuke of U.S. foreign policy under President Donald Trump, warning that the global order could collapse into chaos.
He cautioned against allowing the international system to become a “den of robbers” where the most ruthless take what they want.
In unusually frank remarks, widely seen as referencing recent events like the removal of Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro, Steinmeier said democracy around the world is facing unprecedented pressure.
Though his position is largely ceremonial, the German president’s comments carry moral authority, and he has more freedom to speak openly than many elected politicians.
Reflecting on Russia’s annexation of Crimea and its full‑scale invasion of Ukraine as pivotal moments, Steinmeier called U.S. actions “a second historic rupture.”
He said, “Then there is the breakdown of values by our most important partner, the USA, which helped build this world order.”
Steinmeier added that preventing the world from becoming a place where powerful nations treat regions or entire states as their property is essential.
He stressed the need for proactive responses to threats to global stability and urged countries such as Brazil and India to help defend the international order.
