Tyson Fury has cast fresh doubt on his much-anticipated showdown with fellow British heavyweight Anthony Joshua, saying the fight currently “doesn’t look like it’s going to happen” amid a disagreement over the proposed venue.
The two former world champions had been expected to meet in November in what would be one of the biggest all-British heavyweight fights in boxing history.
However, negotiations have reportedly been complicated by a dispute over whether the bout should be staged in the United Kingdom or the United States.
Joshua and his promoter, Eddie Hearn, are reportedly pushing for the fight to take place in the UK, while Saudi organisers and other stakeholders are favouring Madison Square Garden in New York.
Fury, speaking on social media, blamed Joshua and Hearn for the latest uncertainty, accusing them of demanding more money.
He said it appeared that the two sides might not reach an agreement and suggested that the fight could collapse because of the financial dispute.
Hearn has previously explained that staging the bout in the United States could have tax implications for Joshua, potentially leaving the former world champion with less money than he would earn from a fight held in Britain.
Fury responded angrily, criticising Joshua and Hearn over their position and questioning Joshua’s willingness to face him.
The former heavyweight champion said he would be prepared to move on and fight another opponent if the Joshua bout failed to materialise.
The proposed Fury-Joshua fight has strong backing from Saudi Arabia and is expected to be broadcast on Netflix, with New York reportedly among the leading options for the venue.
However, no final agreement has been reached over the location or financial terms.
Despite Fury’s latest comments, Hearn has previously maintained that negotiations are continuing and that Joshua remains interested in facing Fury.
The disagreement over the venue, taxation and financial arrangements has nevertheless put the long-awaited heavyweight showdown under renewed uncertainty.
If the fight eventually goes ahead, it would bring together two of Britain’s most recognisable heavyweight boxers in a long-awaited clash that fans have anticipated for years.
