South-West Monarchs, Sunday Igboho Meet to Strengthen Regional Security
Traditional rulers from across South-West Nigeria are scheduled to meet with Yoruba activist and founder of the Iru Ekun Security Network, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, to discuss ways of improving security and protecting rural communities from criminal activities.
The high-level security meeting is expected to take place on Friday in Ijero Ekiti, Ekiti State. It is being hosted by the Owa Ajero of Ijero Ekiti, Oba Joseph Adebayo Adewole, and will be chaired by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi.
According to a statement from the Igboho Media Office, the meeting will focus on security challenges across Yorubaland and explore strategies for maintaining peace and stability in the South-West.
Monarchs from Oyo, Lagos, Ondo, Osun, Ekiti, Ogun and parts of Kwara State are expected to attend, alongside other stakeholders involved in regional security.
The organisers said the meeting would also focus on strengthening cooperation between traditional institutions and community-based security initiatives such as the Iru Ekun Security Network.
They said the objective was to develop more effective security measures capable of protecting communities, particularly rural areas, from criminal attacks and other threats.
The statement noted that traditional rulers have an important role to play in maintaining security because of their close relationship with people at the grassroots.
It added that their involvement could help prevent conflicts, resolve disputes and promote peaceful relations between different ethnic groups living in South-West communities.
The meeting comes amid continuing concerns over insecurity in different parts of Nigeria and growing calls for closer cooperation between conventional security agencies, traditional institutions and local security networks.
The Igboho Media Office also praised the Nigerian Army, Department of State Services, Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies for their support for the Iru Ekun Security Network.
It assured that the network would continue working with relevant security stakeholders to preserve peace and safety across the South-West.
The statement specifically commended National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Minister of Defence General Christopher Musa (retd.), Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu, Director-General of the DSS Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi and other heads of paramilitary agencies for their efforts in tackling insecurity and criminal activities across the country.
The organisers expressed optimism that greater collaboration between traditional rulers, security agencies and community-based initiatives would further strengthen security and protect communities across the region.
