The Federal Government of Nigeria has congratulated Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on his election as the 23rd President of Bangladesh, describing his emergence as an important development in the country’s democratic history.

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, conveyed the Federal Government’s congratulations in a message shared on Friday.

She congratulated Alamgir, the government and people of Bangladesh on behalf of Nigeria.

Alamgir was elected by Bangladesh’s Parliament, the Jatiya Sangsad, on Thursday, August 20, 2026. He secured 255 votes, defeating his opponent, retired Colonel Oli Ahmad, who received 88 votes.

His election marked Bangladesh’s first contested presidential election in 35 years, making the development particularly significant in the country’s political history.

In its congratulatory message, the Nigerian government commended the people and institutions of Bangladesh for the peaceful conduct of the electoral process.

Nigeria expressed confidence that Alamgir would provide responsible and purposeful leadership while promoting national unity, political stability, democratic governance and sustainable development.

The Federal Government also described the relationship between Nigeria and Bangladesh as cordial, noting that both countries share common interests, mutual respect and a commitment to international cooperation and multilateralism.

As members of the Global South, Nigeria said the two countries have shared interests in areas including sustainable development, economic growth, food and energy security, climate action and stronger South-South cooperation.

The Nigerian government said it looks forward to working closely with Alamgir and his administration to further strengthen bilateral relations.

Areas identified for deeper cooperation include trade and investment, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, education, information and communications technology, healthcare, culture and people-to-people exchanges.

Nigeria also acknowledged Bangladesh’s role in regional and international affairs and reaffirmed its commitment to expanding cooperation with the country through the United Nations, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and other multilateral platforms.

As Alamgir prepares to assume Bangladesh’s highest constitutional office, the Nigerian government wished him wisdom, good health and success in carrying out his responsibilities.

Nigeria expressed optimism that his administration would contribute to the continued peace, stability, prosperity and development of Bangladesh.

Alamgir’s election has also attracted congratulatory messages from several other countries, including China, the United Kingdom, France and Switzerland, with the countries expressing interest in strengthening their relations with the incoming administration.
