The United States Embassy in London has issued a security alert urging American citizens in the United Kingdom to remain cautious after the government raised the national threat level to “severe.”

In its advisory on Friday, the embassy urged citizens to stay alert in public places and avoid locations such as schools, churches, tourist sites, and transport hubs.

It also recommended varying travel routes and times to reduce predictability and maintaining a low profile.

The UK’s domestic intelligence agency, MI5, said the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre had raised the threat level from “substantial” to “severe,” the second-highest level, indicating an attack is “highly likely” within the next six months.

MI5 said the UK has seen a steady rise in terrorist threats and noted the change was made following a recent stabbing attack on two Jewish men in London’s Golders Green area, although it was not the sole reason.

The agency added that the increased threat is being driven by both Islamist and far-right extremism, with particular risks to Jewish and Israeli individuals and institutions amid tensions linked to the Middle East conflict.

This marks the second security alert issued by the US embassy in recent weeks, following earlier warnings about threats targeting Jewish and American institutions in the UK.
