A person has died after breaching a perimeter fence at an airport in the US state of Colorado and being struck by a Frontier Airlines plane, authorities said.

Airport officials said the person “jumped the perimeter fence and was hit just two minutes later while crossing the runway”.

A small engine fire broke out after the collision but was quickly extinguished by emergency crews.

The airport confirmed that 12 of the 231 passengers on board sustained minor injuries, while five people were taken to hospital.

Officials also stated that investigators inspected the section of fence where the individual entered and found no signs of damage or tampering.

The airport added that the deceased individual is not believed to have been an airport employee.

“We are deeply saddened by this incident and extend our sympathies to everyone affected,” the airport said in a statement.

Local authorities and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched investigations into the incident. The Frontier Airlines flight was scheduled to travel to Los Angeles International Airport.
