Donald Trump has said the US Navy is acting “like pirates,” describing an operation in which American forces seized a ship during the blockade of Iranian ports.

Speaking at a rally in Florida on Friday, Trump said US forces boarded the vessel, took control of it, and seized its cargo, including oil. “It’s a very profitable business,” he added, drawing cheers from the crowd. “We’re like pirates but we’re not playing games.”

Following the US and Israeli attacks on Iran on February 28, Tehran retaliated with strikes on Israel and Gulf countries hosting US military bases.

Iran also shut down the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route through which about 20 percent of the world’s oil and gas supplies pass.

Although a ceasefire between the US and Iran took effect on April 8, tensions remained high. Days later, Trump imposed a blockade on Iranian ports and the Strait of Hormuz on April 13, even as Pakistan continued to mediate negotiations to end the conflict.

Trump said he was “not satisfied” with Iran’s latest peace proposal and warned that he might take military action if talks fail, saying he would “blast them away” if no agreement is reached.
