Officials from Ukraine and the United States have held talks aimed at creating “reliable security guarantees” for Kyiv as part of a Washington-backed peace plan to end Russia’s war.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who met with a Ukrainian delegation led by the head of Kyiv’s National Security and Defence Council, Rustem Umerov, said the discussions on Sunday were “productive” but that there is “more work to be done”.

Rubio expressed optimism despite challenges, stating that the goal is not just to end the war but to ensure Ukraine’s prosperity.

Witkoff is set to travel to Moscow this week to meet Russian counterparts, continuing negotiations that began with a US blueprint for peace.

The plan has faced criticism for potentially favoring Russia, but Rubio emphasized that the US is working to create a pathway for Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence.

The talks come amid Ukraine’s domestic corruption scandal and Russia’s continued military pressure. Rubio acknowledged the complexity of the situation, saying,

“There are a lot of moving parts, and obviously, there’s another party involved [Russia] that will have to be part of the equation.
