Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, has warned that any attempt by the United States to take control of Greenland would bring about the end of the NATO military alliance, as the global fallout from Washington’s military attack on Venezuela and the abduction of its leader continues to spread.
Frederiksen made the remarks on Monday after US President Donald Trump renewed his calls for the Arctic island to be placed under direct US control.
Trump told reporters on Sunday that he would “talk about Greenland in 20 days.” He has repeatedly insisted that Greenland should fall under US jurisdiction, with his latest remarks coming just a day after US forces abducted Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife.
The military operation has raised alarm in Denmark and in Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory within the Danish kingdom and a member of NATO through Denmark.
“If the United States chooses to militarily attack another NATO country, then everything stops,” Frederiksen said.
“That includes NATO itself and the security framework that has existed since the end of the Second World War,” she told Danish broadcaster TV2.
Trump has not ruled out using military force to take control of Greenland. Last month, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, a vocal supporter of annexation, was appointed special envoy to the resource-rich Arctic island.
Meanwhile, Katie Miller, the wife of Trump’s deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, shared a controversial image of the Danish autonomous territory colored like the US flag on her X account on Saturday.
