New Premier League Season Introduces Five Major Rule Changes

The 2026/27 Premier League season has begun with several changes to the way matches will be officiated, with the new measures aimed mainly at reducing time-wasting, limiting unnecessary delays and giving Video Assistant Referee (VAR) a slightly broader role.

Here are five important changes fans should know:

  1. Injured Players Must Stay Off for One Minute
Players who receive treatment on the pitch after play has been stopped for an injury will now be required to remain off the field for at least one minute after the match resumes.

The previous rule required players to stay off for 30 seconds.

  1. Five-Second Countdown for Throw-Ins and Goal-Kicks
Referees can now introduce a five-second countdown when a team is clearly taking too long to restart play with a throw-in or goal-kick.

If a team fails to restart within the allotted five seconds, possession will be awarded to the opposition for a throw-in. In the case of a delayed goal-kick, the opposing team will instead be awarded a corner.

  1. Substituted Players Have 10 Seconds to Leave
Players being substituted will now be expected to leave the pitch within 10 seconds after the substitution is signalled.

If a player takes longer without a legitimate reason, the replacement player will not be allowed to enter until the next stoppage, provided at least one minute has elapsed.

The measure is intended to prevent players from deliberately delaying substitutions and slowing down matches.

  1. VAR Can Review an Incorrect Second Yellow Card
VAR officials will now have the authority to intervene when a player is shown a clearly incorrect second yellow card that results in a red card.

However, the rule does not mean VAR will review every incident where a referee could potentially have awarded a second yellow card.

Intervention will only apply when the second booking is clearly incorrect.

  1. Trial Rule for Goalkeeper Injury Stoppages
The Premier League is also testing a new measure aimed at preventing goalkeeper injuries from being deliberately used to interrupt the flow of matches.

When play is stopped because a goalkeeper is injured, the manager will be required to nominate an outfield player to leave the pitch temporarily.
That player must remain off the field for at least one minute after play resumes.

The Premier League says the trial is intended to discourage teams from using goalkeeper injuries to waste time or create opportunities for tactical instructions.

What the Changes Mean for Fans

The new measures are designed to make Premier League matches faster and more fluid while discouraging deliberate time-wasting and unnecessary stoppages.

Players, managers and referees will all need to adjust to the stricter approach as the 2026/27 season progresses.
