The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate Eid ul Mawlid, marking the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the holiday on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement issued on Friday by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani.
The minister congratulated Muslims across Nigeria and in the diaspora on the occasion, urging Nigerians to reflect on the values of compassion, humility, peaceful coexistence and service associated with the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad.
Tunji-Ojo said the annual celebration provides an opportunity for people to pause and draw lessons from the Prophet’s life, particularly his commitment to compassion, humility and service to others.
He noted that these values remain important to Nigeria at a time when the country needs greater unity, understanding and mutual respect.
The minister encouraged all Nigerians, regardless of religious affiliation, to reflect on the significance of the occasion and promote values that can contribute to national development and peaceful coexistence.
He also urged citizens to use the period to pray for peace, unity and national cohesion, stressing that building and maintaining a united Nigeria is a collective responsibility.
Tunji-Ojo called on Nigerians to celebrate the occasion peacefully and responsibly, while respecting one another and promoting harmony within their communities.
He wished Muslim faithful across the country a joyous and peaceful Eid ul Mawlid celebration.
The minister further reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting lives and property and sustaining peace across the country.
