Moscow has warned it is prepared to respond if Washington moves to deploy weapons in Greenland, according to a senior Russian official.

Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said Russia would take military countermeasures if the United States proceeds with plans to station elements of its proposed Golden Dome missile defence system on the Arctic island.

Ryabkov made the remarks to journalists at the Russian embassy in China on Tuesday, Russia’s state news agency TASS reported.

His comments came just two days before the expiration of the New START treaty, the last remaining nuclear arms control agreement between Washington and Moscow.

“If the Americans decide to bring weapons systems into the region or deploy certain components of their Golden Dome concept in Greenland, that would create a situation requiring military and technical countermeasures, and our specialists would be fully prepared to implement them,” Ryabkov said.

“There can be no doubt about that.”
His comments followed statements last month by US President Donald Trump that talks were underway about the Golden Dome programme Washington’s proposed multilayered missile defence system, which is expected to be completed by the end of his term in 2029 “as it relates to Greenland.”

Trump made the remarks while claiming he had reached an agreement on a “framework for a future deal” concerning the Arctic island, a self-governing territory of Denmark, with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.

He has repeatedly expressed interest in acquiring Greenland for strategic national security reasons, despite strong objections from Denmark, Greenland and other European allies.
