Two police officers have been shot, one fatally, by a colleague following an altercation in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Reports said the officers involved were on special duty at Intels, Onne, before the shooting occurred.

The suspect was immediately arrested and is currently in police custody.

The Rivers State Police Command confirmed the incident on Sunday.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko, described the development as sad and tragic.

She disclosed that one of the officers died on the spot, while the other sustained injuries and was hospitalised.

Iringe-Koko said, “The Rivers State Police Command is deeply saddened to report a tragic and distressing incident that occurred on January 18, 2026, resulting in the loss of a dedicated police officer, Inspector Ibrahim Sani.”

She added that the suspect, Inspector Okus, is a colleague of the victims and was attached to 17 Police Mobile Force but deployed on special duty at Intels, Onne.

According to her, preliminary findings showed that the incident occurred at about 1:20pm at Next Cash and Carry Supermart, Trans-Amadi, Port Harcourt.

She explained that Inspector Ibrahim Sani and Inspector Daniel Dauda, both attached to 14 PMF, Yola, were on joint guard duty with military personnel at the location.

Iringe-Koko said Inspector Okus allegedly shot both officers during the altercation.

She stated that the injured officers were rushed to Nopsam Hospital for medical attention.

She confirmed that Inspector Sani later died from his injuries, while Inspector Dauda is still receiving treatment.

She added that the deceased officer’s body has been deposited at the Military Hospital Mortuary in Port Harcourt for preservation and autopsy.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Olugbenga Adepoju, has ordered a full-scale investigation into the incident.

Iringe-Koko said the suspect will first face an Orderly Room Trial before being charged to court.

She quoted the Commissioner as saying, “A comprehensive and transparent investigation has been directed to ensure that the circumstances surrounding this reprehensible act are thoroughly examined.”

She added that the CP assured that justice would be served in the matter.

Adepoju also warned officers to be professional and cautious in handling firearms while on duty.

Iringe-Koko said the Commissioner described firearm handling as a serious responsibility that must never be treated as routine.

She added that the CP extended his condolences to the family of the deceased officer and urged all personnel to prioritise safety at all times.
