Justice F.A. Fiberesima granted the order following an ex-parte motion filed by the governor and his deputy in two separate suits

A Rivers State High Court in Oyibo Local Government Area has issued an interim injunction stopping the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike-Amaewhule, and 32 others from proceeding with the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Nma-Odu.
Justice F.A. Fiberesima granted the order following an ex-parte motion filed by the governor and his deputy in two separate suits.
The court specifically barred the Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Chibuzor-Amadi, from receiving, forwarding, or acting on any impeachment-related documents from the defendants.
The injunction is set to last seven days. Justice Fiberesima also allowed the claimants to serve court processes on the first 31 defendants, including the Speaker, by pasting them at the Rivers State Assembly gate, while service on the Chief Judge is to be done through any staff of the judiciary at the High Court.
The court adjourned the matter to January 23, 2026, for hearing on the motion on notice.
The ruling temporarily halts all impeachment proceedings as political tensions in Rivers State continue to rise.
