Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino said on Wednesday that he will step down from his position in January.
According to sources familiar with his thinking, Bongino has been informing colleagues that he plans to leave in the new year, although no formal announcement has yet been made.
Sources also told Journalists that he has begun gradually clearing out his office.
President Donald Trump was asked by reporters about Bongino’s future during a brief exchange on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday afternoon. He responded, “Dan did a great job. I think he wanted to go back to his show,” referring to the podcast Bongino previously hosted.
In a post on X, Bongino thanked President Trump, Attorney General Pam Bondi, and FBI Director Kash Patel “for the opportunity to serve with purpose.”
“Most importantly, I want to thank you, my fellow Americans, for the privilege of serving you,” he added.
“God bless America, and all those who defend her,” he added.
Bongino’s future had been uncertain since July, following backlash over the Justice Department’s decision not to release additional records from its investigations into the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter who spoke to ABC News.
Sources said Bongino had indicated to close associates that he might resign in response to the outrage surrounding the decision.
Bongino had frequently discussed the Epstein case on his podcast.
