A drone attack hit Iraq’s Khor Mor gas field on Wednesday night, forcing the facility to suspend operations and causing widespread power outages across the Kurdish region in northern Iraq.

The attack, which occurred around 11:30 pm local time, targeted several gas storage tanks, sparking a massive fire and explosion that injured several workers.

The Khor Mor gas field, one of the largest in the Kurdistan region, provides gas supplies for regional power generation.

The attack has resulted in an expected 3,000 megawatt drop in power generation, affecting approximately 80% of the region’s power grid.

The Iraqi government and the Kurdistan Regional Government have condemned the attack, with Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani describing it as “an attack on all of Iraq”. A joint investigative committee has been formed to identify those responsible.

The attack is the latest in a series of drone strikes targeting Iraq’s energy infrastructure, with local officials pointing to Iran-backed militias as likely perpetrators.

The Khor Mor gas field is operated by Dana Gas, a UAE-based company, and is part of the Pearl Petroleum consortium.
