Somaliland has marked its first Independence Day since receiving recognition from Israel, though the move remains divisive in the breakaway Somali region.
Thousands gathered in Hargeisa on Monday for military parades and traditional celebrations following Israel’s recognition of Somaliland in December the first country to do so since Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991.
President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi said Somaliland had proven itself to be peaceful, democratic and deserving of international recognition.
While some residents welcomed the new ties with Israel, others criticised the relationship, especially amid Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza.
The African Union and many countries still oppose Somaliland’s recognition over fears it could fuel separatist movements across Africa
