The confirmation came after the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters recommended his nomination

The Senate on Tuesday approved the appointment of Joseph Olubunmi Kayode Oyewole as a Justice of the Supreme Court.
The confirmation came after the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters recommended his nomination.
President Bola Tinubu had submitted Oyewole’s name for consideration last week.
The National Judicial Council (NJC) had earlier endorsed Oyewole, who previously served as the presiding Justice of the Court of Appeal in Enugu Division.
NJC’s Deputy Director of Information, Kemi Babalola-Ogedengbe, said the Council, at its 110th meeting on January 13, 2026, under the leadership of Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, recommended Oyewole for the Supreme Court, along with 35 other candidates for judicial positions across the country.
Born on May 13, 1965, Oyewole hails from Ila-Orangun in Osun State. He fills the southwest seat vacated by the retirement of former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.
