The Kogi State Government has ordered the temporary closure of schools across the state as a precaution, citing credible security intelligence and the need to protect pupils, students, and teachers.

Addressing journalists in Lokoja on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, said the move was taken out of responsibility rather than panic, stressing that the government chose to act proactively to prevent avoidable incidents.

He added that Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo had directed relevant agencies to put measures in place to ensure schools resume as soon as it is safe, so as not to disrupt the academic calendar.

Fanwo praised security agencies for providing timely and actionable intelligence, noting that the collaboration highlights the strength of the state’s security system.

He reassured residents that authorities are fully in control of the situation, saying security operatives are working around the clock to locate and dismantle criminal hideouts.

“The safety of our children, teachers, and educational institutions is non-negotiable. This administration will always prioritise lives while ensuring continuity in governance and education,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Kogi State Chairman of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, Pastor Reuben Jimoh, directed members to bring forward the midterm break in line with the emergency closure.

He announced that schools would remain closed until February 16, 2026, warning that no institution should disregard the directive.

The Kogi closure follows similar precautionary measures in Kebbi and Kwara states, where schools were shut after bandit attacks on schools and churches before reopening weeks later.
