Sources within the party disclosed that Obi was the sole contender to complete the process before the deadline expired on Sunday, May 17, 2026, positioning him as the frontrunner for the party’s presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general election.

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has closed the sale of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms for its 2027 presidential primary, with former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, emerging as the only aspirant to pick the forms before the deadline.
Sources within the party disclosed that Obi was the sole contender to complete the process before the deadline expired on Sunday, May 17, 2026, positioning him as the frontrunner for the party’s presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general election.
Obi recently joined the NDC after parting ways with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a move that has continued to stir conversations across Nigeria’s political landscape.
In a statement issued by the National Secretary of the party, Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, the NDC announced that while presidential form sales had officially ended, aspirants contesting governorship, National Assembly, and State Assembly positions would still be allowed to obtain forms until midnight on May 24, 2026.
The party stated that screening of aspirants would commence on May 19 and continue through May 26, while the nomination phase for cleared candidates is also scheduled to take place within the same period.
According to the statement, aspirants are expected to provide academic qualifications, voter identification cards, birth certificates or sworn declarations of age, passport photographs, party membership evidence, and six copies of their curriculum vitae.
The NDC explained that its screening committee would evaluate aspirants based on competence, integrity, grassroots support, and compliance with zoning arrangements and local political realities.
The party also noted that its affirmative action policy for women, youths, and persons living with disabilities would form part of the consideration process.
With no other presidential aspirant purchasing the forms before the deadline, Obi is expected to emerge as the party’s consensus candidate once the screening and clearance procedures are completed.
