Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has attributed Nigeria’s enduring poverty to poor leadership and the celebration of public officials who embezzle state resources.
Speaking on Thursday in Abuja while receiving a delegation from the Association of Skilled and Vocational Artisans of Nigeria (ASVAN) led by national president Obijuru Everest, Obi said Nigeria’s rich natural and human resources should have positioned it among the world’s leading economies.
According to a statement by Ibrahim Umar, spokesperson for Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR), Obi said the country’s economic struggles stem from corruption and the neglect of key sectors like education and healthcare.
“We are poor because we have chosen to be poor. We give titles and front-row seats of honour to those who steal public funds, and yet we expect to grow,” Obi said.
He recalled conversations with political leaders in Indonesia, noting how effective leadership and strategic investment have propelled that country’s progress.
He added that focusing on anti-corruption measures and investing in education and healthcare are crucial for driving economic growth in Nigeria.
