The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Wednesday staged a protest in Lagos over worsening insecurity across the country, hours after its leadership met President Bola Tinubu at the State House, Abuja.
The late-night meeting, confirmed by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, involved the NLC leadership, the Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, Hope Uzodimma, Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, Kebbi State Governor Dr Nasir Idris, and the Minister of State for Labour, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha. The NLC delegation was led by its National President, Comrade Joe Ajaero.
Despite the engagement, NLC members were seen early Wednesday blocking major roads in parts of Lagos, marching to demand urgent government action to end insecurity. Protesters carried placards with inscriptions such as “Federal Government, No More Excuses and Rhetorics! End Insecurity Now” while singing solidarity songs.
Police officers were deployed at the protest to monitor proceedings and prevent any breakdown of law and order.
The demonstration signals that labour remains dissatisfied with the outcome of the talks, insisting on immediate and concrete measures to tackle insecurity nationwide.
