At least four people have been killed and more than 30 injured in Kenya during nationwide protests against soaring fuel prices.

According to Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen, at least 348 people were arrested on Monday as demonstrators took to the streets in support of a nationwide public transport strike.

Authorities are on high alert after similar protests over the past two years turned deadly despite heavy police crackdowns.

Speaking at a televised briefing, Murkomen said four people lost their lives in the violence while dozens were injured.

In Nairobi, police fired tear gas at protesters who blocked major roads with burning tyres and hurled stones, leaving parts of the city centre deserted.

The strike disrupted transport services in major cities, including Mombasa, forcing many commuters to walk long distances to work and school.

Transport unions are demanding the government reverse recent fuel price hikes after Kenya increased retail fuel prices by up to 23.5 percent last week, following another sharp rise the previous month.

The rising fuel costs have also driven up food and commodity prices, worsening economic pressure on many households across the country.
