At least nine Nigerian soldiers have been confirmed dead following an explosion caused by improvised explosive devices (IEDs) near Gubio in Borno State.
A senior military official shared details of the incident in an exclusive interview with reporters on Monday morning.
The official confirmed that preliminary investigations indicated the explosives had been planted by Boko Haram.
He explained that the soldiers were traveling from Maiduguri when the deadly blast occurred. “While returning from Maiduguri on Saturday, they stopped at a roadside camp to rest before continuing their journey on Sunday,” the source said.
A military source confirmed that several soldiers were injured during the incident, with fatalities continuing to rise after the initial explosion.
“Eight of those injured died yesterday (Sunday), and one more succumbed to injuries this morning,” the source told Newsmen.
The official clarified that the attack was not an ambush by gunmen but the result of explosives planted along the soldiers’ route.
“The incident occurred in Gubio; it was not an ambush but caused by explosive devices,” he said.
He added that casualties were significant, noting that “many sustained serious injuries,” and confirmed that “nine people have already been confirmed dead.”
Further details revealed that the affected soldiers belonged to “145 Damasak under 5 Brigade, Maiduguri, Borno State,” with the explosion occurring in the evening on Sunday.
A video and photograph obtained by Journalists captured the aftermath of the deadly attack, showing several Nigerian Army personnel lying lifeless at the scene. The disturbing visuals indicated that many of the fallen soldiers had suffered severe injuries, including severed limbs, consistent with the impact of powerful explosives.
The incident is the latest in a series of deadly attacks targeting Nigerian troops in the North-East, where Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) continue to carry out coordinated assaults on military formations and patrols using both gunfire and explosive devices.
As of this report, the Nigerian Army had not issued an official statement or provided further information about the circumstances surrounding the explosion.
In a similar attack in November 2025, suspected ISWAP fighters ambushed a Nigerian military convoy in the region, killing several soldiers and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF). During that assault, the insurgents described as heavily armed and highly organized executed a coordinated strike that caused multiple casualties and spread panic across the area.
The attackers also abducted a serving Brigade Commander along with other military personnel.
