A Nigerian doctor, Olusina Ajidahun, has clarified the medical situation surrounding veteran Yoruba actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, following emotional appeals from his daughters over his battle with stage-four cancer.
Ogogo’s daughters, Lima and Kira Taiwo, recently appealed publicly for medical assistance, saying their father’s condition had deteriorated and alleging that hospitals were no longer willing to continue his treatment.
Reacting to the development, Ajidahun, who is known on X as The Bearded Dr Sina, explained that the statement that hospitals had “refused to treat” the actor might not accurately describe what was happening.
The doctor said patients with stage-four cancer may be placed under palliative care after chemotherapy and other appropriate treatment options have been explored.
He explained that palliative care is designed to control pain and other symptoms, provide comfort and improve the patient’s quality of life when a disease can no longer be cured.
Ajidahun cautioned against interpreting a transition to palliative care as doctors abandoning a patient.
He also warned that portraying healthcare professionals as deliberately refusing to treat Ogogo could create unnecessary hostility towards doctors and other medical workers.
The doctor further advised the public against recommending unverified herbal mixtures as treatment for advanced cancer.
According to him, there is no evidence that herbal concoctions can cure stage-four cancer, while some unverified substances could damage other organs and worsen a patient’s condition.
He explained that stage-four cancer occurs when cancer has spread from its original location to other parts of the body.
He advised patients and their families to maintain close communication with qualified medical professionals when considering treatment options.
Ajidahun stressed that he was not part of Ogogo’s medical team and was commenting independently after seeing the videos posted by the actor’s daughters.
Meanwhile, Lima had said the family only discovered the seriousness of her father’s condition about three weeks earlier, despite his outward appearance not initially suggesting how severe the illness had become.
She appealed to anyone with connections to cancer specialists or medical facilities capable of treating her father to come forward, emphasising that the family was seeking medical help rather than financial donations.
In a separate video, Kira also disclosed that Ogogo had stage-four cancer and claimed that the hospital had told the family that chemotherapy could no longer be administered.
She appealed for assistance from qualified medical professionals and cancer treatment facilities, expressing her fear of losing her father.
Ogogo, 66, is a veteran of the Nigerian film industry whose career spans more than four decades. He has appeared in hundreds of films and remains one of the most prominent figures in Yoruba-language cinema.
His daughters’ appeals have generated concern among fans and members of the entertainment industry, with many offering prayers and support to the actor and his family.
