The Group of Seven (G7) and the European Union have called on Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and allied armed groups to immediately stop attacks and actions that could trigger further atrocities or threaten civilians in El-Obeid, North Kordofan State.

In a joint statement on Wednesday, G7 foreign ministers and the EU’s foreign policy chief urged all parties involved in Sudan’s conflict, including the Sudanese army, to halt fighting, ensure humanitarian access and participate in genuine peace talks.

The international partners backed United Nations efforts to calm the crisis and called on the UN Security Council to extend the current Darfur arms embargo to the whole of Sudan in an effort to reduce the flow of weapons fueling the conflict.

They also urged external countries and groups to end military and financial support for the rival factions, warning that continued backing could prolong the war and worsen the humanitarian situation.

The G7 pledged to support efforts to hold perpetrators of abuses accountable while reaffirming its commitment to Sudan’s sovereignty, unity and the aspirations of its people for a democratic future.
