Natasha Osawaru, wife of Nigerian music star Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2Baba, has been appointed Minority Leader of the Edo State House of Assembly.
Osawaru, who represents Egor Constituency, assumed the position during Monday’s plenary session following a reshuffling of the Assembly’s principal leadership positions.
Her emergence follows her defection from the Peoples Democratic Party to the National Democratic Congress in May 2026.
The new position places her at the forefront of opposition leadership within the state legislature.
According to a statement issued by her Media and Strategic Communications Directorate, lawmakers reorganised several key leadership positions during the plenary held at the Assembly Complex in Benin City.
The statement said Osawaru’s appointment reflected the confidence her colleagues and constituents had placed in her legislative abilities and leadership.
Before her new appointment, Osawaru served as Deputy Majority Leader of the Assembly. During her time in the legislature, she has been involved in issues relating to grassroots development, parliamentary debate, and the empowerment of women and young people.
Reacting to her elevation, Osawaru expressed appreciation to the leadership of the Assembly, her colleagues and the people of Egor Constituency.
She described the new position as a responsibility rather than merely a title, stressing the importance of accountability, constructive debate and effective representation of citizens.
Osawaru also reaffirmed her commitment to the development of Edo State, the progress of the NDC and the welfare of the people of Egor.
Her appointment is expected to strengthen her role in the Assembly and give her a prominent voice in opposition politics within the Edo State legislature.
Her new position is expected to give her a greater role in shaping legislative debates and scrutinising government policies.
As Minority Leader, Osawaru will also be responsible for coordinating opposition lawmakers and presenting their views on important matters before the Assembly.
Her appointment comes amid ongoing political realignments in Edo State, with lawmakers adjusting to new party affiliations and alliances.
Osawaru is expected to use her new position to advocate for issues affecting her constituents while contributing to debates on governance, development and accountability across the state.
