The trial of Adeniyi Kayode, driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the crash carrying former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua, has been adjourned to February 25, 2026, by a magistrate court in Sagamu, Ogun State.
Kayode appeared in court on Tuesday for the continuation of his trial.
He was first charged by the Ogun State Police Command on January 2 with four offences: dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention, and driving without a valid national driver’s licence.
Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun had earlier granted Kayode N5 million bail with two sureties, remanding him in a correctional facility pending fulfilment of the bail conditions.
The trial had been initially adjourned to January 20.
During Tuesday’s proceedings, prosecuting counsel Richard Nigiwe informed the court that three of the four witnesses were present, including officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO).
Nigiwe requested the case be adjourned to March to allow duplication of the case file and submission to the Ogun State Attorney-General for legal advice.
Defence counsel Olalekan Abiodun opposed the request, arguing that the trial should proceed since the witnesses were present.
The magistrate, however, adjourned the case to February 25, ordering the prosecution to duplicate the file and forward it to the Ogun AG.
The accident occurred on December 29, 2025, when the SUV carrying Joshua and three associates collided with a stationary truck near Sinoma, Sagamu.
Joshua sustained minor injuries, while two of his associates, Kevin Latif Ayodele, his personal trainer, and Sina Ghami, his long-time friend and strength and conditioning coach, died.
Joshua was discharged from Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, on December 31, 2025, after receiving treatment for his injuries.
