Egypt’s Sisi, Saudi Crown Prince Stress Need for Secure Red Sea Navigation
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman have stressed the importance of protecting the freedom and security of navigation in the Red Sea and the strategically important Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

The two leaders discussed maritime security and regional developments during talks on Tuesday, according to a statement from the Egyptian presidency.
The Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and the wider Indian Ocean, is one of the world’s key maritime routes.

Any disruption to shipping through the waterway can have significant consequences for international trade, energy supplies and global supply chains.

During the discussions, President Sisi expressed Egypt’s support for measures being taken by Saudi Arabia to safeguard its security and stability.

He also reaffirmed support for diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a comprehensive and sustainable political settlement to the crisis in Yemen.

The talks took place amid continuing tensions in the Middle East, particularly concerns over security around the Red Sea and nearby maritime routes.

The region has faced repeated security challenges, raising concerns among governments and international shipping operators about the safety of commercial vessels using the waterway.

Egypt and Saudi Arabia have consistently emphasised the importance of regional stability and the protection of international waterways.

Both countries have significant economic and strategic interests in maintaining secure maritime routes in the Red Sea.

The Egyptian presidency said the discussions also reflected the importance of supporting political efforts to resolve the Yemen crisis.

A lasting settlement in Yemen is widely regarded as an important factor in reducing regional tensions and improving security around the Red Sea.

The Red Sea is particularly important to Egypt because the Suez Canal, which links the Mediterranean Sea with the Red Sea, is a major international trade route.

Any prolonged disruption to shipping in the region can force vessels to take longer alternative routes, increasing transportation time and costs.

The meeting between Sisi and the Saudi Crown Prince therefore highlighted both countries’ concerns over maritime security and their continued interest in diplomatic efforts to promote stability in the region.
