Toyin Abraham Rejects Inclusion in Lagos APC Campaign Council, Says She Is Staying Out of Politics

Nollywood actress, Toyin Abraham, has distanced herself from the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress campaign council after her name was included among members of its Entertainment and Creative Economy Directorate ahead of the 2027 elections.

Abraham, in a statement shared on her Instagram Story on Thursday, said she was not a member of any political campaign council and urged the public to disregard reports linking her to the Lagos APC campaign structure.

“I’m not a member of any campaign council. I have said it recently. I am staying out of politics. Please disregard the supposed inclusion of my name in any campaign committee,” she stated.

Her reaction came shortly after the Lagos APC unveiled its campaign council, in which Abraham was listed alongside several prominent figures in the Nigerian entertainment industry.

Those listed in the Entertainment and Creative Economy Directorate included veteran actors Jide Kosoko, Eniola Badmus, Bimbo Akintola, Adebayo Salami, Saheed Balogun and Bukky Wright, as well as Fuji musicians such as Wasiu Alabi Pasuma, Obesere and Adewale Ayuba.
Toke Benson-Awoyinka was named Director of the directorate, while Kosoko was listed as Co-Director and Badmus as Deputy Director.

Despite Abraham’s public rejection of the reported appointment, her name remains on the 33-member directorate in the campaign council document released by the Lagos APC.

The actress’s decision to stay away from political activities comes against the backdrop of controversy that followed her public support for President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election.

Following her declaration of support for Tinubu, Abraham faced criticism and attacks from some social media users, particularly supporters of other presidential candidates.

In March 2023, the actress spoke about the backlash during a Twitter Space, claiming that some supporters of Peter Obi had petitioned Netflix to remove her movies from its platform.

She also said some individuals had targeted brands associated with her, including Checkers Custard, and called for her removal as a brand ambassador.

Abraham further disclosed that she had been subjected to insults and threats on social media, with some of the attacks extending to her husband, actor Kolawole Ajeyemi, and their son.

The controversy continued after the 2023 election, with the actress remaining a subject of criticism over her political position.

In 2024, another dispute involving Abraham and an X user identified as Big Ayo attracted widespread attention after the actress took action over what she described as cyberbullying and defamatory allegations against her and her family.

The X user had allegedly accused Abraham of using money linked to Tinubu to finance a hair transplant for her husband.

Abraham denied the allegation and reported the matter to the cybercrime authorities.

She later clarified that she did not cause the arrest of the man’s mother, contrary to claims circulating online, explaining that her complaint was related to alleged cyberbullying and defamatory content.

The individual was subsequently released from police custody following public appeals and an online campaign calling for his release.

The incident triggered another round of criticism against Abraham, with some social media users threatening to report her films to streaming platforms and calling for Netflix to remove her movies.

In July 2024, Abraham appeared emotional during an Instagram Live session while discussing the prolonged attacks against her.

She said the experience had taken a serious toll on her and disclosed that she had been pushed to the limit.

She also said that attacks had extended to her child, while maintaining that she had only exercised her legal rights by filing a petition with the appropriate cybercrime authorities.

Abraham subsequently stated that while she could tolerate insults directed at her, she would not accept attacks involving her children.

Her latest decision to publicly distance herself from the Lagos APC campaign council marks a clear withdrawal from active political campaigning, despite her previous public involvement in the 2023 presidential election.

The Lagos APC campaign council has yet to indicate whether Abraham’s name will be removed or whether the published membership list will be amended following her public clarification.
