The party said the decision was taken collectively by members of the APC in Rivers State and not by Wike, who it noted is not a member of the party

The All Progressives Congress in Rivers State has denied claims that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, influenced Governor Siminalayi Fubara to abandon his second-term ambition.
The party said the decision was taken collectively by members of the APC in Rivers State and not by Wike, who it noted is not a member of the party.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News, Rivers APC Publicity Secretary, Chibuike Ikenga, said party stakeholders agreed to pursue a different political direction for the sake of peace and development in the state.
According to Ikenga, Wike may be a strong political figure in Rivers State and across the country, but he does not determine the decisions of the APC in the state.
He said, “Though he is a very serious colossus in Rivers State and Nigeria at large, he doesn’t influence what happens in Rivers State.
“We the members of APC discussed and took our decision solely on an agreement we had to chart another course, that is why the governor took that step for the interest of peace and progress of the state.”
The development comes after Fubara disclosed that he had been under serious pressure to make a decision ahead of the APC governorship primaries.
The governor also suggested that some events surrounding the party’s primaries could not be fully disclosed to the public.
Fubara’s administration has been overshadowed by a prolonged political crisis involving his predecessor, Wike, who currently serves as FCT minister.
Wike, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, had previously declared that Fubara would not secure a second term as governor of Rivers State.
