His resignation was confirmed on Monday, following a directive by the presidency mandating all political appointees seeking elective office to step down on or before March 31, 2026.

Foreign Affairs Minister, Yusuf Tuggar, has resigned from President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet as he moves to pursue his ambition to contest the 2027 governorship election in Bauchi State.

His resignation was confirmed on Monday, following a directive by the presidency mandating all political appointees seeking elective office to step down on or before March 31, 2026.

Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed that Tuggar submitted his resignation letter to the president around noon.

A source familiar with the development said the former minister is preparing to join the Bauchi governorship race on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The directive affects ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, personal assistants, directors-general, as well as heads of federal agencies and parastatals who intend to contest in the 2027 elections.

The order is in line with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, and the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for party primaries ahead of the general elections.

Tuggar’s resignation comes with less than 24 hours to the deadline, as more appointees with political ambitions are expected to leave their positions in compliance with the directive.
