Ebrahim Jabari, a senior adviser to the IRGC’s commander-in-chief, said on Monday: “The strait is closed. If anyone tries to pass, the heroes of the Revolutionary Guard and the regular navy will set those ships on fire.”

A commander in Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has declared that the Strait of Hormuz is closed and warned that any ship attempting to pass through it will be attacked, according to Iranian state media.

Ebrahim Jabari, a senior adviser to the IRGC’s commander-in-chief, said on Monday: “The strait is closed. If anyone tries to pass, the heroes of the Revolutionary Guard and the regular navy will set those ships on fire.”

Tehran has also targeted key infrastructure linked to global energy supplies as part of its retaliation for Israeli and US airstrikes that began on Saturday.

Iranian officials say the strikes killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and several other senior figures.

In a message posted on the IRGC’s Telegram channel, Jabari said Iran would also attack oil pipelines and prevent any oil exports from the region. “Oil prices will reach $200 in the coming days,” he warned.

He added, according to the semi-official Tasnim news agency, that the United States burdened with trillions of dollars in debt depends heavily on the region’s oil, but “not even a single drop will reach them.”

The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, is one of the most important oil shipping routes in the world, with about 20 percent of global oil supplies passing through it.

Any disruption in the waterway could cause crude oil prices to surge further and heighten concerns about a wider regional conflict.

Energy prices had already climbed sharply earlier on Monday, as interruptions to tanker traffic through the strait and damage to production facilities increased uncertainty over how the US-Israeli strikes on Iran might impact global oil supplies.
