Speaking on Monday, Trump dismissed the idea of allowing Iran to collect transit fees from vessels using the strait

Donald Trump has suggested that the United States could impose tolls on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz after the war, a move that would likely require direct U.S. military control of the key route.
Speaking on Monday, Trump dismissed the idea of allowing Iran to collect transit fees from vessels using the strait.
“What about us charging tolls? I’d rather do that than let them have them. Why shouldn’t we? We’re the winner. We won,” he said.
He repeated his claim that Iran has been militarily defeated an assertion he has made since the early stages of the conflict despite ongoing drone and missile attacks across the region and Iran’s continued blockade of the strait.
“The only thing they have is the psychology of, ‘Oh, we’re going to drop a couple of mines in the water.’ All right, no! we have a concept where we’ll charge tolls,” Trump told reporters.
The Strait of Hormuz, which links the Gulf to the Indian Ocean, lies largely within Iranian and Omani territorial waters and is one of the world’s most critical energy routes.
Before the war, about 20 percent of global oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments passed through it.
Trump’s remarks came as he issued what he described as a “final” ultimatum to Tehran: reopen the strait and agree to U.S. terms or face potential strikes on civilian infrastructure, including bridges and power plants.
He added that any agreement with Iran must include reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
