The Anambra State Police Command has arrested Ifesinachi Ezeolu, 28, as the man behind a violent masquerade that assaulted residents during the Ofala Festival in Awgbu community, Orumba North Local Government Area.

Footage that circulated online showed the masquerade chasing passers-by, attacking people, disrupting a public event, and spreading panic in the community over the weekend.

SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the police spokesman, confirmed Ezeolu’s arrest in a Saturday statement and said investigations are ongoing to identify others involved.

He added, “The Nigeria Police Force respects cultural and traditional practices, but no activity should be used to harass, assault, or intimidate citizens. Masquerade activities must be conducted peacefully and within the law.”

The command warned that any action causing fear, injury, or public disorder will be dealt with promptly.

CP Ikioye Orutugu, Commissioner of Police, reassured residents that the police will continue working with traditional rulers and community leaders to promote safe and peaceful cultural celebrations.

Koikimedia reports that the masquerade’s rampage included pushing motorcycle riders, chasing people, and destroying property, while being encouraged by onlookers.
