Government Girls’ Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, has reopened its doors months after armed bandits killed the vice principal and abducted 25 students.

The attack took place in the early hours of Monday, November 17, 2025, at the boarding school in Maga, Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area.

During the raid, the bandits shot dead Vice Principal Malam Hassan Yakubu Makuku and abducted 25 schoolgirls from their dormitory.

One of the students managed to escape immediately, while the remaining 24 were rescued on November 25, 2025, following coordinated operations by security agencies and were safely returned to their families.

Kebbi State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Dr Halima Bande, said in a statement on Tuesday that counselling sessions and the deployment of security personnel had restored trust among parents, staff, and students, allowing academic activities to resume.

“The abducted students are now safe, and confidence has been restored through counselling and security arrangements. This has cleared the way for the school to reopen,” Dr Bande said.

She explained that the decision followed a security meeting with principals and heads of secondary schools in Birnin Kebbi.

Dr Bande also revealed that Governor Nasir Idris had directed enhanced security measures across public schools in the state.

According to the commissioner, the government has conducted security awareness programmes for school officials, with similar sessions already held in Zuru, Yauri, Jega, Bunza, and Argungu, and the Birnin Kebbi meeting marking the final phase.

Dr Bande stressed that the safety of schools is a shared responsibility and urged staff and students to remain vigilant.

She also encouraged school leaders to work closely with host communities and security agencies to strengthen preventive measures.

She commended the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Department of State Services (DSS) for their role in raising security awareness among school administrators.
