U.S. lawmaker Mary Miller has accused radical Islam of being responsible for the deaths of thousands of Christians in Nigeria. In a post on X, she said, “Radical Islam is responsible for the mass slaughter of THOUSANDS of Christians in Nigeria and around the world.
This dangerous ideology has NO place in America.”Her remarks come as the United States increases pressure on Nigeria to stop what it has described as a genocide against Christians. Earlier, the U.S. government pledged to take action over what it has referred to as a “genocide against Christians.”
The position was disclosed by the U.S. House Committee on Appropriations on Wednesday through its official X account, in response to a post by Congressman Riley Moore, who revealed that he was in Benue State meeting with Christians living in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps after suffering severe violence.
Moore wrote that during his visit to Benue, he met dozens of Christians who had been forced from their homes and subjected to horrific attacks and are now living in IDP camps. He said they shared harrowing accounts that would stay with him for the rest of his life.
According to Moore, one woman was forced to watch as her husband and five children were killed, narrowly escaping herself along with her unborn child. Another woman witnessed the murder of her family and had her baby ripped from her womb. He also recounted the story of a man whose family was hacked to death in front of him, leaving one of his arms permanently mangled.
Moore added that more than 600,000 Christians are currently living in IDP camps in Benue State alone, stressing that they should be able to live in their ancestral homes without fear of violence.
In response, the U.S. House Committee on Appropriations wrote on X:
“America will not look away as innocent lives are stolen. Directed by @POTUS, Appropriators led an on-the-ground mission to inform a report on Christian persecution in Nigeria and guide policy recommendations. Religious freedom and atrocity response are central to our NSRP bill.”
Earlier, Newsmen reported that Congressman Moore had raised renewed concerns about Nigeria’s worsening security situation, warning that the country still has significant work to do to curb terrorism and deadly attacks, particularly in the North-East and Middle Belt regions.
In another post on X, Moore said he met with Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, where discussions focused on the escalating wave of terrorism and continued killings. He described the issue as a major concern for both U.S. President Donald Trump and himself.
Moore stated that the delegation discussed concrete steps and actions with Nigerian officials which, if fully implemented, could help stabilise the country. He said these measures could improve security nationwide, disrupt and dismantle terrorist groups in the North-East, and halt the killing of Christians, especially in the Middle Belt.
While acknowledging some initial progress, Moore stressed that Nigeria’s security challenges remain far from resolved. He added that although much work still lies ahead, developments are moving in the right direction, and he looks forward to continued engagement with the Nigerian government.
He concluded with a message to Nigerians, saying, “Peace be with you all. God bless the great people of Nigeria.”
