Director and actor Rob Reiner and his wife were found dead at their home in Los Angeles, according to U.S. media reports. The Los Angeles Police Department said in a statement on Sunday that it is investigating the deaths of two individuals in what appears to be a homicide.
The Los Angeles Fire Department said it responded to a medical aid call shortly after 3:30 p.m. (23:30 GMT) and found a 78-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman dead inside the home. Reiner turned 78 in March.
Media reports later identified the deceased as Reiner the director of Hollywood classics such as When Harry Met Sally and This Is Spinal Tap and his wife.
A law enforcement official, speaking anonymously to The Associated Press, said investigators believe the couple suffered stab wounds and that a family member was being questioned in connection with the incident.
Reiner, who co-starred in the 1970s CBS television hit All in the Family, went on to direct several acclaimed films, including The Princess Bride and Stand by Me.
Beyond his career in Hollywood, the New York native and son of the late comedy writer and actor Carl Reiner was also widely known for his political activism.
He appeared in advertisements criticizing George W. Bush during the 2004 presidential election and supported Democratic candidate John Kerry. Reiner also backed Democratic presidential hopefuls Al Gore and Hillary Clinton.
“Rob Reiner’s contributions have resonated throughout American culture and society, and through his creative work and advocacy for social and economic justice, he improved countless lives,” Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said.
Reiner married photographer Michele in 1989, and the couple had three children together.
He was previously married to the late actor and director Penny Marshall from 1971 to 1981, and he adopted her daughter, Tracy Reiner.
Reiner’s representatives have not yet commented on the deaths.
