A pregnant woman and her 18-month-old son have been found burnt to death after unknown assailants reportedly broke into their home in Sheka Sabuwar Gandu, Kano metropolis.
The incident was discovered around 8 pm on Saturday when the woman’s husband returned from work and found the house locked from the outside.
It was gathered that he forced the door open and found the lifeless bodies of his wife and child, both burnt after being attacked.
A community leader, Ahmad Sani, confirmed the incident and lamented the lack of security presence in the area.
Sani said residents had earlier constructed a police outpost through communal efforts, but authorities were yet to deploy personnel to man the facility.
“For a long time, the community built a police outpost, but the authorities have yet to deploy personnel to man the facility,” he said.
He appealed to the Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, to urgently deploy officers to the outpost to improve security and prevent further attacks.
Reacting, the Police Public Relations Officer in Kano State, CSP Abdullahi Haruna, said the command had commenced investigation into the incident.
“Yes, it’s true the incident happened, but we are investigating the issue,” Haruna told our correspondent via WhatsApp on Sunday.
The killing is the latest in a series of reported attacks on pregnant women in Kano State.
Earlier this year, Trust TV reported the murder of a five-month-pregnant woman, Rumasau Shuaibu, in the Farawa area of the state.
Shuaibu was allegedly stabbed to death with a kitchen knife on a Sunday evening, while police said investigations were ongoing to arrest those responsible.
