Lagos, Nigeria | April 7 2025

A tense face-off is expected today between the Nigeria Police Force and protesters in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, and other cities as the “Take It Back Movement” stages demonstrations against several government actions.

The group is protesting the controversial cybersecurity levy, the declaration of emergency in Rivers State, and the alleged illegal extension of Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun’s tenure.

The protest coincides with National Police Day, prompting strong warnings from the police who described the action as “subversive” and “ill-timed.”

Police authorities have deployed massive security across key cities, warning that the protest, planned under the guise of economic hardship, poses a threat to national security.

“The rationale behind staging a nationwide protest on the same day is questionable and perceived to be a deliberate attempt to malign the Nigeria Police and the nation,” said Force spokesperson ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi.

He said the police recognise the right to peaceful protest but urged the organisers to “reconsider the timing” as April 7 has been set aside to celebrate the achievements of the Police Force, with dignitaries, including foreign police chiefs, expected in attendance.

In Lagos, the State Police Command described the protest as the handiwork of “subversive groups” and “misguided anti-government forces” who plan to incite unrest using social media propaganda.

Deputy Commissioner Tijani Fatai warned that criminal elements could hijack the protest to target government facilities and opposition figures.

Security has been beefed up across Lagos, with personnel drawn from the Department of Operations, RRS, CTU, PMF units, and other tactical teams to protect critical infrastructure and ensure normalcy.

Despite the warnings, one of the protest leaders, politician Omoyele Sowore, said the demonstrations would proceed as planned.

“Regardless, tomorrow’s protest must go on across Nigeria. Nothing can stop the movement of the people!” he declared.

The protesters plan to gather at Ikeja under-bridge in Lagos, the National Assembly in Abuja, Isaac Boro Park in Port Harcourt, and Iwo Road in Ibadan.
