U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that the joint U.S.–Israeli military campaign against Iran is nearing completion, but warned that Iran will face heavy attacks over the next two to three weeks as Washington pushes to achieve its remaining objectives.
In his first national address since the conflict began on February 28, Trump sought to reassure Americans that the war effort has been worthwhile.
“Based on the progress we’ve made, I can say tonight that we are very close to achieving all of America’s military goals,” he said from the White House.
He added that while the war’s “core strategic objectives are nearly achieved,” the United States would still “strike extremely hard over the next two to three weeks.”
Trump also reassured regional allies including Israel, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Bahrain who have been hit by Iranian drones and missiles, saying the U.S. “will fully protect them and ensure they do not suffer harm or failure in any form.”
He suggested that negotiations could be possible with Iran’s new leadership, which he described as “less radical and more reasonable” than the previous government, indicating interest in a potential deal to end the conflict.
However, he warned that if talks fail, the U.S. is prepared to target critical infrastructure, including Iran’s power plants.
Despite his remarks, global energy markets remained unsettled. Oil prices surged on Thursday after Trump urged other nations to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz a vital shipping route through which about 20 percent of the world’s oil supply passes.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards stated on Wednesday that the strait would remain closed to what they called the country’s “enemies.”
