The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said the accident occurred when the motorcyclist rode against traffic, causing a violent collision with the tanker

Two people have died after a petrol tanker collided with a commercial motorcycle along the Epe–Ijebu Road in Lagos State.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said the accident occurred when the motorcyclist rode against traffic, causing a violent collision with the tanker.
Both the rider and his passenger were killed instantly.
LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq confirmed the arrest of the tanker driver, describing the crash as “wholly preventable.”
He said, “Preliminary findings show the commercial motorcyclist, carrying a male passenger, was unlawfully traversing a one-way route in blatant breach of traffic regulations when struck by the tanker travelling at high speed. The impact proved fatal.”
Taofiq added that LASTMA operatives at the scene quickly secured the area to prevent further accidents before alerting emergency responders.
“The tanker driver was taken into custody, and the crash site cordoned off to safeguard public safety. The remains of the deceased and the driver were handed over to the Nigeria Police Force, Noforija Division, for investigation and legal action,” he said.
Lagos State Governor’s Special Adviser on Transportation, Sola Giwa, extended condolences to the families and urged motorists and commercial motorcyclists to obey traffic laws.
“This tragic loss of lives was entirely avoidable. If the motorcyclist had stayed in his lane and obeyed traffic rules, this incident would not have occurred,” Giwa said.
