US President Donald Trump has confirmed he is postponing plans to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping later this month, as the ongoing US-Israel war with Iran continues to dominate Washington’s attention.
“We are resetting the meeting,” Trump told reporters at the White House on Tuesday. “We’re working with China. They were fine with it.”
Trump said he wants to remain in Washington as the conflict enters its third week and the Strait of Hormuz remains largely closed to global shipping.
“Because of the war, I want to be here. I have to be here,” he said.
Trump had been scheduled to visit Beijing from March 31 to April 2, but now plans to travel in about five weeks, likely toward the end of April.
His last state visit to China was in 2017 during his first term.
China’s Foreign Ministry said both countries remain in communication regarding the visit.
Trump and Xi were expected to discuss key issues including trade tariffs, China’s export controls on rare earth materials, US relations with Taiwan, and concerns over fentanyl exports.
The US-China trade war was paused in October after the two leaders agreed to a truce during talks in South Korea, and both sides have since been working toward a broader trade agreement.
Although Trump initially took a tougher stance on China at the start of his second term, his tone has softened following his meeting with Xi in South Korea.
