President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for stronger collaboration with the United Kingdom to address terrorism threatening West Africa, stressing the importance of sustained bilateral support to maintain regional stability.

Tinubu made the call while speaking at Windsor Castle during his official visit, where he addressed King Charles III and other dignitaries.

He said the region continues to face complex security challenges linked to instability in the Sahel, noting that Nigeria plays a central role in efforts to preserve peace across West Africa.

“Our West African region faces complex terrorism challenges with roots in the Sahel. Nigeria carries an enormous responsibility to help safeguard regional stability,” Tinubu said.

He added that partnership with the UK remains crucial in confronting the threats, expressing his willingness to engage Keir Starmer on improving intelligence-sharing, capacity building, and joint operations.

The president spoke before members of the British Royal Family, including Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, as well as senior officials from both nations.

Tinubu described the occasion as a profound honour and reaffirmed the longstanding ties between Nigeria and the UK, built on shared history and mutual interests.

He also commended Nigerians living in the UK, particularly those working in the National Health Service, for their contributions to healthcare delivery.

On governance, the president noted Britain’s influence on Nigeria’s legal system, referencing the Magna Carta as a foundation for the rule of law and democratic governance.

Despite the security challenges, Tinubu expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, describing the country as resilient and determined to achieve progress.

He further appreciated the UK’s support during Nigeria’s years under military rule, noting that its backing for pro-democracy movements remains significant.

His remarks come amid criticism over his UK visit following a recent bomb attack in Maiduguri, Borno State, which left several persons dead and others injured.
