Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed the situation with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as Israel expands operations against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.
The proposal would see Israel avoid escalation in Beirut if Hezbollah stops all attacks on Israel, a move the official said could lead to a gradual reduction in fighting.
Aoun reportedly tried to advance the plan but was blocked by Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, who was described as evasive and blamed Israel for first steps toward a ceasefire.
The U.S. official said Hezbollah is following Iran’s direction and called for an immediate halt to its attacks, adding that Israel should not face continued strikes on its civilians.
