The Ekiti State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of three people following a stampede at a hotel in Ikere Ekiti.
Sources said the incident occurred during an after-convocation party organised by students of the Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology, Ikere Ekiti, after the institution’s second convocation ceremony held on Saturday.
It was gathered that the celebration turned chaotic during the party, leading to a stampede that resulted in multiple deaths.
Confirming the incident on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer in Ekiti State, SP Sunday Abutu, said the Commissioner of Police, Michael Falade, had ordered a comprehensive investigation.
“The Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, Michael Falade, has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident that happened at a hotel in Ikere Ekiti at about 1 a.m. on Sunday, which led to the death of a hotel staff member and two students.
“A preliminary investigation revealed that the students, after their convocation on 18th April, 2026, went to the hotel for a party.
During the event, which lasted into the early hours of the following day, two yet-to-be-identified students reportedly had a disagreement and began fighting.
“Other guests ran out of the hotel in panic, resulting in a stampede that claimed the lives of three persons.
The bodies of the deceased have been deposited in the morgue for autopsy,” the statement read.
He added that the Commissioner of Police commiserated with the families of the victims and assured that the command would conduct a thorough investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
