If nothing is done about this, I’ll go to the other side and I’ll join Boko Haram, I’ll be helping them to fix their guns and training them

A retired Nigerian policeman has sparked widespread concern after threatening to join Boko Haram, citing frustrations over delayed pension payments and poor welfare conditions for retired officers.
In a statement that quickly circulated online, the ex-officer warned, “If nothing is done about this, I’ll go to the other side and I’ll join Boko Haram, I’ll be helping them to fix their guns and training them.”
Describing his pension situation as “slavery,” he highlighted what he calls years of neglect after serving the nation.
His remarks have raised alarm among the public, with many warning of the security risks posed by a former officer with training and experience in law enforcement.
The threat comes amid ongoing protests by retired police officers.
In September 2025, they besieged the National Assembly in Abuja, condemning the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) as a “fraudulent system” keeping them in poverty, and demanded the Nigeria Police Force be removed from it.
The House of Representatives transmitted the Nigeria Police Force Pension Board Bill, which the Senate later approved.
In December 2025, Senate President Godswill Akpabio assured the protesting retirees that they would be removed from the CPS and that the matter would be expedited for presidential assent.
As of now, publicly available records show that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has not signed the bill, leaving the removal of police officers from the CPS unresolved.
