Hundreds of protesters on Monday marched to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) headquarters in Abuja, calling for a thorough investigation into the alleged N432 billion corruption involving former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

The demonstrators, under the Mega National Movement for Good Governance, carried placards reading “Answer The Charges El-Rufai” and “El-Rufai Not Above The Law,” while chanting solidarity songs. Attempts to enter the EFCC premises were blocked by security operatives.

Spokesman Muhammad Abdullahi said the protests were aimed at ensuring accountability, not political theatrics.

“The prosecution of former Governor El-Rufai is a lawful and constitutional matter between him and the Kaduna State Government. This is about public trust and stewardship, not political drama,” Abdullahi said.

He cited the Kaduna State House of Assembly Ad-Hoc Committee Report (2024), which highlighted alleged financial mismanagement, public debt concerns, and irregular contract awards under El-Rufai’s administration. Abdullahi also noted that some former aides, including Jafaru Sani, Jimmy Lawal, Bashir Saidu, and Samuel Aruwa, are already under investigation or in custody.

Abdullahi called on the EFCC and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) to conduct a transparent, evidence-based probe, stressing that the process must be guided by law and not influenced by external pressures.

EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale responded, assuring the protesters that their petition would be forwarded to the commission’s executive chairman. He encouraged peaceful demonstrations and affirmed that all issues raised would be professionally examined.

The protest comes amid heightened scrutiny of alleged financial improprieties during El-Rufai’s eight-year tenure, following a unanimous petition by all 28 members of the Kaduna State House of Assembly to the EFCC and ICPC.
